The history.
In 1956, BMW unveiled their stunning two-seat roadster named the 507 with the aim of providing an exhilarating performance and luxury experience. Due to its incredible rarity, it remains one of the most coveted BMW models ever produced. In 1997, at the Tokyo Auto Show, BMW displayed a handsome, retro-inspired concept car called the Z07. Designed by Henrik Fisker, the concept was initially intended to exist solely as a concept and not a production model. However, the reception of the concept was overwhelmingly positive, BMW noticed and decided to pivot, and put it into limited serial production in 1999.
The production variant dubbed the “Z8” remained incredibly faithful to the Z07 concept with 507-like twin nostril front grille and the all-distinctive front-wing vents. One of the Z07’s most beloved features was the interior, which also carried over into the Z8 including its banjo-style steering wheel. The sleek yet muscular bodywork was entirely aluminum including its spaceframe chassis. Power came from the remarkable S62 engine producing 400 horsepower. Additionally, the Z8 was fitted with all the luxury features one would expect from a flagship model such as power seats, power convertible top, traction control, stability control, and more.
On top of the product itself, a gorgeous, hand-built, limited-production roadster, BMW also promised to keep a 50-year stockpile of Z8 parts so maintenance would be relatively headache free. By the time Z8 production was over, just 5,703 were produced, and of that just 2,500 for the United States.

THE CAR.
Chassis # WBAEJ13403AH62055
The ultra-rare BMW Z8 presented here, chassis #WBAEJ13403AH62055, is finished in one of BMW’s best factory colors, Stratus Grey over a Crema interior and sports just 8,100 miles.
This well-kept example was originally delivered in late 2002 to famed director Frank Darabont. Darabont is known for his director role in “Shawshank Redemption” as well as being the creator of the famed series “The Walking Dead.” He owned this example for 17 years accruing just 8,000 miles in his ownership. Darabont had this Z8 fitted with the Performance Package, which added extra rigidity via a suspension brace, stiffer spring strut support bearings, and reinforcement rings. Throughout its tenure regular servicing was carried out at Century West BMW, in North Hollywood, and BMW of Monterey, California.
As noted, this Z8 is finished in the incredibly rare Stratus Grey over a Crema interior making this one of less than 50 Z8s produced in this combination, and we think it wears it fantastically. Overall, this is an excellent Z8 in a rare color combination with celebrity provenance. There is a host of accessories accompanying the car, including the hard top, car phone, tool kit, unique owners' book and an extensive history file.
