The history.
With one-make racing series gaining popularity across Europe in the early 1990s, by 1992 Ferrari had decided to throw their hat in the ring. The Ferrari 348 Challenge was unveiled at Mugello in September 1992. Each 348 Challenge began life as a standard road-going 348 TB, TS, GTB or GTS model. Customers would then have their local Ferrari dealer install the separate Challenge upgrade kit.
To control costs, the Challenge kit focused primarily on safety upgrades and other essential parts for track use. The body panels, engine, transmission, suspension components, brakes, and other major parts remained in standard road-going specification.
The 348 Challenge kit included a bolt-in roll cage, a pair of Kevlar racing seats trimmed in fireproof red fabric, seat mounting brackets, four-point racing harnesses, and a fire extinguisher - all supplied by the renowned manufacturer OMP.
Additionally, the kit featured a Momo three-spoke steering wheel, a set of drilled aluminum pedals, an electric kill switch, an underbody NACA brake cooling duct (referred to as the dynamic cooling kit), a Challenge-spec exhaust box, Plexiglas front light covers, front and rear tow hooks, a 348 Challenge badge, and a decal pack.

THE CAR.
Chassis # ZFFRG35A8R0097985
This particular 1994 Ferrari 348 TB Challenge, chassis #ZFFRG35A8R0097985 is 1 of just 45 factory-built 348 Challenge cars produced, and 1 of 32 TB (coupe) variants - The rest being TS models. It wears its largely original Rosso Corsa paint over contrasting Beige interior and shows just 30,857 miles from new.
This 348 Challenge was originally delivered to the famed Ferrari racing team at Risi Competizione In Houston, Texas in 1994 where it was looked after by the same mechanics from the Risi team. It remained there for the next 3 years and roughly 16,000 miles. During this period it saw a new owner, plenty of documented routine maintenance at Ferrari of Houston, and a 15,000 mile major service was completed which included the all important engine-out timing belt replacement. In 2004, it changed hands again, this time stationed in Nevada where it received another major engine-out belt service and was driven sparingly, showing just 21,397 miles on the odometer. Between 2008 and 2015 the car remained with a single owner in Connecticut while continuing the theme of sensible enjoyment while it gained just 5,000 miles under their care. During this ownership stint, the car had two major engine-out services and routine maintenance with its last service carried out in 2015 at Maranello MotoWorks of Colorado.
In 2016 the current owner purchased the car and promptly spent just shy of $17,000 in serving which included a major. The renowned Ferrari expert, Dugan Enterprises was entrusted to handle this work. Much of the costs went towards the Challenge-specific bits and dialing them in for presentation with the goal of turning the car into a concours winning example. Under the current owners care, this 348 Challenge has been successfully displayed at a plethora of noteworthy automotive events such as The Quail during Monterey Car Week in California, the famed Ferrari-Only Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach Florida, and The FCA National Concours at Watkins Glen in New York.
Though the Ferrari Challenge car may not feel dramatically different from a standard 348, the exclusivity of being in a low-production, specialized model imbues the experience with a heightened sense of specialness. As it stands today, this 348 Challenge has just 30,857 miles and is in excellent driver-quality condition with an interior to match, and the complete Challenge catalog of parts, tool kit, Challenge books, manuals, extensive service documentation, map light, Speedline Ferrari Challenge wheels, and factory Challenge exhaust. Additionally, it comes with its Ferrari White Book, which may only be issued by Ferrari’s Classiche department for cars with special historical significance.
