The history.

Ferrari began their mid engine V8 line of sports cars with Ferrari in 1975 with the 308. The 308 featured a transversely-mounted 2.9 liter V8 producing 252 hp. Early examples featured fiberglass bodies and weighed just over 1000kgs, and the power was sufficient for such a light weight car. In 1985 Ferrari updated the model, and released the 328. Largely an evolution of the 308 with a new, bigger 3.2 liter V8 making 270hp.

In 1989 the successor to the 308/328, the 348 was a welcomed refresh for the V8 mid-engine line. A greater departure from the 328 which was only a small evolution over the 308, the 348 boasted many more changes. The 348 borrowed design ques from the Testarossa with its side-mounted radiators and door strakes. The engine was also rotated to be longitudinally. The 348 was designated in three different ways, in “TB”, “TS”, and “Spider” which was for the coupe, targa, and convertible respectively. All 348s were equipped with the 3.4 liter naturally aspirated V8 that produced 300hp. The 348 is also the final V8 Ferrari to have been developed under the watchful eye of Enzo himself, the founder of Ferrari.

THE CAR.

Chassis # ZFFFG36A3L0086692

This excellent driver-quality 348 TS, chassis #ZFFFG36A3L0086692 and engine #23787, is presented in Rosso Corsa over a tan interior with just 37,000 miles. Originally delivered to Palm Beach, FL where it remained for roughly 5 years and just 4,400 miles. From there, the car was relocated to the state of Maryland where it accumulated a majority of its miles reaching just over 35,000 miles. During their ownership they had the 348  serviced frequently, including major belt services which were typically handled by Ferrari of Washington which included two engine out services in 1997 and 2002. In 2010, the final belt service this example received was carried out by Competizione & Sports Cars of Gaithersburg, Maryland. On top of the full belt service they also installed a fresh clutch, as well as inspecting and cleaning the heads, valves, and cylinders. The job totalled to $15,928, while time would suggest a fresh belt service, this was done with roughly 35,000 miles on the odometer and it has only traveled less than 3,000 miles since the service.

In 2015, the 348 was acquired by its final owner. Over that decade the car was driven sparingly on special occasions mostly, and also small drives to prevent any issues from sitting. This example was displayed at the 2019 “Eyes on Design” event in Metro Detroit which celebrates automotive design and the designers behind it. That year they celebrated Leonardo Fioravanti, who designed the 348 while working for Pinanfarina.

Today, this example sits at 37,778 miles and presents in fantastic driver-quality condition. We believe the paint to be original and all around it looks fantastic. Benefitting from a recent comprehensive detail from our friends at Finishing Touch Auto Spa, a full paint correction was carried out along with an engine bay and interior cleaning. The interior is in great condition with minimal wear throughout, mostly in the high-traffic areas like the driver side seat bolsters and door sill but nothing offensive. The engine bay is completely correct with the right markings, stamps, and stickers in place with no chipping on the crinkle finish found on the intake and intake runners. As noted, the last major service was completed in 2010, however the car has only covered roughly 3,000 miles since the belt replacement.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to acquire a well-looked-after example with the right amount of miles where it can be enjoyed without worry of value. Included in the sale of this 348 is the full tool kit, books and manuals, factory mufflers, and the original rear wheels.
