The history.

Amid the rarest vehicles BMW has ever produced as well as the first to be solely created by the BMW “M” division, the M1 is a homologation special made between 1978 to 1981 and was originally a joint project between Lamborghini and BMW. The original concept for the BMW M1, from 1975, was created to represent the brand in a new racing championship series based on cars with production silhouettes. However, by the time the M1 was ready for production, appeal had swung, and Silhouette cars were no longer in favor.

In 1978, they began constructing the first M1s, planning to enter into the World Sportscar Championship for the 1979 season, pivoting from the production silhouette cars of the past. BMW Motorsport had prepared to have cars meet the regulations for Group 5, but a late rule change altered the requirements, which would mean 400 examples would need to be produced in order to meet Group 4 regulations so it could then be further homologated for Group 5.

Rather than delaying the program entirely, they decided to create a separate one-make series, with just the M1 racecars, since the total number of cars still counted towards the 400 they would need for Group 5. This would grant them more exposure with the M1 as well as a chance to develop the cars through experience. This birthed the series dubbed “Procar” which primarily served as support races for the 1979 Formula 1 series. The best drivers in the world from multiple disciplines competed with Niki Lauda winning the 1979 Championship and Nelson Piquet the 1980 season.

In total, 460 examples of the M1 were handbuilt, 399 of which were made for the road. They all featured the Giorgio Giugiaro designed, TIR molded, fiber-glass body, a chassis built by Marchesi, and a handbuilt M88/1 engine.

THE CAR.

Chassis #WBS59910004301211

The incredible original example presented here, Chassis #WBS59910004301211, is 1 of just 59 examples finished in Blue over black leather interior with cloth inlays. This M1 has just 15,560 kilometers and boasts a well-documented history from new and an iconic first owner who cherished the car for 42 years.

This BMW M1 was completed on March 13th, 1979 and remained in Germany until delivery. All of the original documentation we have on file confirms that this BMW M1's first owner was one of the founders of the legendary band, Pink Floyd. Shortly after purchasing the car out of Germany, the original owner had it imported into the United Kingdom on April 5th, 1980. The original order form billed out to the legendary band member and the rest of his initial purchase documentation is included in the sale.

Pink Floyd had just finished a year's worth of recording and touring ahead of their November 1979 release of The Wall. An album that would go on to be recognized as one of the greatest of all time selling over 30 Million copies. Shortly after its release, and presumably from the success of the album, this M1 was purchased in the spring of 1980. During this time, three iconic smash singles were released, “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2”, “Comfortably Numb,” and “Run Like Hell.” Songs that broke records, topped charts, and occupy a special place in musical history. In conjunction with the release of the album, the band was also on their “The Wall Tour" during 1980-1981. With all of this going on, it is hard to imagine how the band member even managed to take delivery of his special M1!

Throughout the original owner’s long tenure with the car, he kept extensive documentation including many past registrations, service records, and original purchase documentation. Most of the service records date to 2006, however many of the yearly MOT tests and registrations were saved which date back as early as 1987. From 2006 to 2020, Meridien Modena, of Lyndhurst, UK looked after the car, carrying out all of the maintenance for this M1. Over the 14 years under their care, they performed MOT tests, oil changes, tire replacements, and more, totaling to over £12,466. As a testament to its long term UK based history, masks are still present on the corners of the asymmetrical headlamps according to factory recommendations in the owner’s manual so as to not “dazzle oncoming drivers” when changing from right to left-hand-drive traffic.

In August of 2021, the original owner imported the M1 to the United States. By January of 2022, he began correspondence with the current owner and consignor, who ultimately ended up purchasing the M1 directly from the Pink Floyd founding member in a private transaction. Most of their correspondence is documented and can be available to the new owner. After taking delivery, its second and current owner sent the car to R&R Automotive Restorations, of Mount Kisco, NY where they began an extensive servicing of the car while keeping preservation and originality at the forefront of their efforts. They performed a baseline fluids service, rebuilt the shocks, replaced suspension bushings, disassembled and rebuilt brakes, replaced various hoses and clamps, installed a new clutch slave cylinder, and more. The total cost of this major service and reconditioning was just over $34,000. All of the parts needed for the service were carefully sourced NOS pieces with an estimated value of over $20,000. Following the mechanical work, the car was sent to Turn 7 Auto Care, of White Plains, NY for a full detail in preparation for the prestigious event, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. This event, held during the famed Monterey Car Week in 2022 is one of the most celebrated and exclusive events in the world of collector cars. This M1 didn’t win just any award, it won the entire “50th anniversary of BMW M Division” class. A true testament to its originality and presentation.

Today, the car presents in fantastic condition as a two-owner, preservation quality car.  This is a special opportunity to own one of the most original M1 examples remaining bolstered by extensive documentation and single ownership for the first 42 years of its life. This M1 represents a unique piece of history in the timeline of Pink Floyd’s popularity. Purchased in the midst of the band’s iconic album release, by a founding member, at one of the most crazed and popular times for the band. This M1 is not only a time-capsule example, it is also a piece of musical history making it a must-have for any serious Pink Floyd enthusiast. This marks the first time it has ever been publicly offered for sale.

Included with the car are original sales documents, past registrations, Pink Floyd Backstage Pass from “The Wall Tour” circa February 1980, extensive service records, tool kit, manuals, and spare tire.
