The history.

In 1973, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 911 Turbo prototype was first teased. One year later, in October of 1974, at the Paris Motor Show, Porsche unveiled the 911 Turbo - internally known as the 930. In its first three years, they would build just 2,850 units.

The early 1975-1977 911 Turbo Carrera were equipped with a 3.0 liter, non-intercooled turbo Flat-6. The motor featured forged alloy pistons with Nikasil barrels, a lightweight aluminum crankcase, and a 3 LDZ turbocharger resulting in 260hp and 253lb-ft of torque. This was a staggering increase over the most powerful naturally aspirated 911s of the era which made just 210hp and 188lb-ft of torque. All 930s received dramatic exterior changes as well which included a wider body, forged alloy wheels by Fuchs, and an integrated engine cover-rear spoiler combo.

THE CAR.

Chassis #9307800410

The 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera presented here, Chassis #9307800410 is a well-documented, numbers-matching, early 930 equipped with the 3.0 liter engine. It is finished in Paint-To-Sample “Dove Grey” which is a sample from a 1976 Lincoln Mark IV Cartier Edition. This is documented in the “Turbo 3.0” book by Ryan Snodgrass, which serves as a compendium for Porsche 930s built from 1975 to 1977. It was also optioned handsomely with the limited-slip differential, Recaro sport seats, and the electric sliding sunroof.

This example was originally delivered to Porsche Audi Martin Johnson, in Oakland, California to its first owner, Mr. James R. Orosco, of Lafayette, California. According to the accompanying maintenance booklet, the car was serviced every 3,000-4,000 miles throughout his ownership at Lasher Porsche Audi. James owned the car for 15 years and 58,000 miles before the second owner, Eddie W. of El Segundo, California purchased the car in April of 1992 and subsequently had the engine rebuilt under his ownership though no documentation is available for this. In 2023, after 31 years of ownership, it was sold to its third owner. Ironically, the new owners name was also Eddie though he only owned the car for 6 months at which time, it was sold to its 4th owner whom we acquired the car from.

Today, the car presents in fantastic condition given its higher mileage of 101,700. We believe the paint is largely original based on paint meter readings with potentially some touch up spots towards the front of the car. This example also benefits from some tasteful upgrades such as a larger turbo, upgraded exhaust, euro bumper, and removal of California smog equipment.  A recent paint correction, detail, and mechanical service totally accentuates how nice this example really is. In 2023, PS Racing Company in Burbank, California performed some extensive engine work including replacing the valve covers, various gaskets and hoses, as well as brake system overhaul with upgraded 3.3 liter Turbo brakes which are a welcome addition being that the early 3.0L Turbo brakes are notoriously anemic. The interior which remains in original and great condition and is equipped with cork sports seats and dark brown carpeting, the only replacement part we noticed is the steering wheel appears to be retrimmed, and feels great in the hands.

Having only built roughly 2,800 3.0 liter Turbo Carreras, finding a Paint-to-Sample example in highly original condition such as this is a tall order. Finding one you can drive without too much attention to the mileage perhaps an even taller order. This is easily one of the most unique 3.0 liter cars we’ve had the pleasure of offering and believe this is a fantastic place to park some capital while enjoying one of the greatest 911s to come out of Stuttgart.

Included in the sale of this vehicle is the Porsche Production Specification Certificate, original documents, service records, books, manuals, tools, California smog equipment, full new-old-stock exhaust, original US bumper, turbocharger, California blue plates, and spare parts. In preparation for this sale, we replaced the brake pads, the front trunk and engine cover struts, performed an oil change, and a full detail including a paint correction.
