The history.
The Mercedes-Benz 280 SE, produced from 1969 to 1972, was a standout model in the company's luxury coupe and cabriolet lineup. Designed by Friedrich Geiger, it featured a powerful 3.5-liter overhead-cam V8 engine - the first post-war Mercedes to exceed 3 liters. This gave the 280 SE a distinct sporting edge as it competed for the title of ultimate 4-seat convertible.
The 280 SE's design was modernized with a lower, wider grille, revised front and rear bumpers, and updated rear lighting. Inside, it offered a luxurious leather and rosewood interior, along with standard features like air conditioning and automatic transmission. Despite the high price tag of $14,000, reflecting the car's exceptional quality and craftsmanship, the Daimler-Benz factory could only produce around 13 units per week. In total, just 4,502 280 SE coupes and convertibles were built, with the convertible accounting for 1,232 of those.

THE CAR.
Chassis # 111.027-12-003274
The 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet presented here is finished in Tobacco brown over cognac. This color combination compliments the car fantastically and provides for a stunning configuration for this top tier convertible Mercedes. It is equipped with the 4-speed column shift automatic transmission, Behr A/C, and an aftermarket Pioneer radio.
Early history on this particular example is sparse but we were able to discover from the consignor that the car was a NYC, one-family owned example only used on Sunday drives. When the man who drove it most passed away, the family decided to part ways with it to avoid the car sitting for too long.
Today this 280SE presents as a really strong driver. The older restored paint is holding up very well with a deep and consistent shine along with beautiful and bright chromework. The entire features redone front seats but a fully original rear bench with a really nice patina. All of the interior functions work as they should and mechanically the car remains sound. All in all, this extremely collectible V8 powered Mercedes-Benz that is ready for continued use on those sunny Sunday drives where it will provide a smooth and comfortable drive.
Included in the sale is the jack and spare tire.
